Same Midterm Question. 8.5 Points Apart on Two Platforms. Here’s What That Means.

TLDR;
Kalshi and Polymarket price identical midterm questions 8.5 points apart. The median cross-venue gap is over 4 points. Here's what the spread actually means.

Prices as of 05:08 UTC, August 28, 2026. Midterm election markets are live across Kalshi and Polymarket.

"Blue tsunami in 2026?" is a real market. It is live on both Kalshi and Polymarket right now, worded identically on each. On Polymarket it is trading at 44.5%. On Kalshi it is trading at 36.0%. That is an 8.5 percentage point gap on the same sentence.

"Blue wave in 2026?" shows the same spread: 82.5% on Polymarket, 74.0% on Kalshi. Again 8.5 points, again identical wording.

These are not anomalies. Across a sample of directly comparable binary markets currently live on both venues, the median gap between Kalshi and Polymarket is more than four percentage points. Nearly half of all matched pairs differ by five points or more.

Why the Gap Exists

Kalshi and Polymarket draw different trader bases. Kalshi's user base skews toward US retail traders who arrived via sports markets and financial event contracts. Polymarket's international exchange attracts a globally distributed trader pool — including, until recently, a significant share of US-linked accounts using the offshore platform before the domestic exchange launched.

Those different communities hold different views, and they express them through different prices. Neither venue is wrong in any simple sense. They are two separate crowds producing two separate consensus estimates for the same question. The question is which one gets cited.

That is not a trivial problem. When a journalist, analyst, or policymaker quotes "what the market says," they are choosing one number. If the two largest prediction markets in the world are 8.5 points apart on the same question, a single-venue quote omits the disagreement entirely — and the disagreement is the information.

The Fee Gap Is Separate From the Price Gap

A cross-venue price comparison is not complete without accounting for fees. Kalshi charges takers 0.07 × P × (1−P) on each side, with a maker discount. Polymarket's standard markets charge zero fees on the international exchange. That structural difference means the all-in cost of the same implied probability can differ significantly between venues even when the headline prices look close.

predictions.io's free Fee Calculator — at predictions.io/tools/fee-calculator — takes any trade and shows the fee, total outlay and effective all-in price on each venue using each platform's actual formula. The Odds Converter at predictions.io/tools/odds-converter converts American, decimal and fractional formats into implied probability and shows the vig-free line.

Going Into the Midterms

The 2026 midterms are the next major event-driven catalyst for prediction market volume. The NFL season opens September 9 and will carry most of the short-term volume, but political markets tend to have sustained and deepening liquidity as election day approaches — November 3 is ten weeks away.

The price gaps documented above are likely to narrow as election day draws closer and volume concentrates. The question of whether Kalshi's 36% or Polymarket's 44.5% is the more accurate estimate of a Democratic wave will only be resolved by the result. Until then, tracking both is more informative than tracking either one alone.
