Polymarket Was Worth $9 Billion Ten Months Ago. Now It’s $20 Billion. Here’s Why.

TLDR;
Polymarket is raising $1 billion at a $20B+ valuation, months after closing at $15B. Kalshi is already at $22B. Here's how fast the industry has grown.

Polymarket disclosed early-stage fundraising talks at a $20 billion-plus valuation on August 4, 2026. The company was valued at $9 billion in October 2025.

Ten months. Three fundraising rounds. A valuation that has grown from $9 billion to $20 billion while the company built, launched, and scaled a regulated US exchange from scratch.

Polymarket is in early talks to raise approximately $1 billion at a valuation above $20 billion, according to Bloomberg, with a person familiar with the discussions separately confirming the talks and the figure to CNBC. Polymarket declined to comment.

The Valuation Timeline

October 2025: Polymarket valued at $9 billion. The company was primarily operating its global, crypto-native exchange at that point, with US users restricted.

March 2026: The New York Stock Exchange's parent company, Intercontinental Exchange, completed a $600 million direct cash investment in Polymarket. That investment had been announced in October 2025 at a valuation of approximately $8 billion and closed months later.

April 2026: Polymarket closed a funding round at a $15 billion valuation, bringing in hedge fund D.E. Shaw and venture capital firm G Squared as new investors alongside existing backers, including Intercontinental Exchange.

May 2026: Polymarket launched its regulated US exchange to the public.

June 2026: Annualized revenue crossed $1 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to CNBC.

August 4, 2026: Bloomberg and CNBC reported the $20 billion-plus talks.

Where Kalshi Sits

Kalshi has already closed at a higher valuation. In May 2026, Kalshi raised $1 billion at a $22 billion valuation — a round that closed roughly three months before Polymarket's current talks. Kalshi accounted for approximately 83% of notional trading volume across CFTC-approved prediction market exchanges during July, according to Sportico, up from 58.9% market share in Q2.

The combined monthly volume across Kalshi and Polymarket reached $26.6 billion by July 2026, according to data from Dune cited by the Associated Press. That is the number behind the valuations — not user growth or brand recognition, but actual notional trading volume that has grown at a rate most financial platforms would not see in a decade.

What Built the Volume

Three things drove the growth between October 2025 and today.

The World Cup. Kalshi ran a Times Square billboard featuring Lionel Messi alongside the Kalshi logo. It bought pitch-side signage at the World Cup final. It aired a Timothée Chalamet television ad campaign nationally. Polymarket ran 45 ads during live World Cup broadcasts on Fox and Telemundo. The advertising investment was in the hundreds of millions of dollars across both platforms. It converted.

The US exchange launch. Polymarket's May launch of a regulated US exchange opened the platform to American retail users who had previously been excluded. Revenue crossed $1 billion annualised within weeks of the launch.

Institutional money finding the category. D.E. Shaw, G Squared, Intercontinental Exchange — the NYSE's parent company — and now prospective new investors at $20 billion are not making promotional plays. They are pricing a financial infrastructure business that processes tens of billions in monthly volume and generates more than a billion dollars in annualised revenue.

What Comes Next

Both Kalshi and Polymarket have announced plans to expand into perpetual futures — a direct challenge to crypto exchanges. Kalshi launched a Commodities Hub in April with markets tied to oil, gold, and lithium. The prediction market category is widening from event contracts toward broader financial market infrastructure.

Polymarket's CEO Shayne Coplan has described the platform's ambition as becoming an information market rather than a trading venue. The $20 billion valuation is the market's reply.
